A Museum Exhibits Preparator is responsible for the design, fabrication/construction, installation, and repair of interpretive and educational exhibits at City of Mesa Museum facilities. This position uses such materials as: wood, acrylic, glass, or other materials necessary to prepare and display museum exhibits. Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art, Industrial Design, or related field; coursework in drafting, industrial engineering, or graphic design or three to five years’ experience in finish carpentry and at least two years in exhibit design, preparation, fabrication, or installation preferred. Skills and Proficiencies: Proficiency with hand and power tools (e.g., drills, saws, routers, sanders, spray painters, nail/staple guns), carpentry, painting, lighting, fabrication, and gallery preparation skills. Ability to clean, maintain, and safely operate workshop equipment and exhibit areas. Capacity to lift and move objects up to 100 pounds with equipment assistance, work at heights of 12 feet, and perform strenuous physical tasks. Essential Abilities: Read and interpret drawings, floor plans, artist renderings, and technical documents. Estimate material needs and timeline; plan and direct exhibit construction and installation. Translate concepts into exhibit designs; produce technical drawings; and anticipate technical needs. Collaborate with staff, contractors, and volunteers to design and fabricate exhibits; resolve procedural and deadline challenges. Communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and the public, including explaining hazards. Work in varied conditions (tight spaces, outdoors, inclement weather) and meet scheduling/attendance requirements. Knowledge/Abilities: Knowledge of conservation, preservation, and art handling methods. Ability to establish effective working relationships and ensure exhibits align with museum objectives while remaining cost-effective. Hours will be as needed up to 20 hours a week.
